Big Oak Wolf Sanctuary
THE FENCE REPLACEMENT PROJECT Update

To our 57,684 followers:

Most of you know that we launched a 375K fence-funding campaign late last year to replace the 2 ½ linear miles of 8’ and 10’ fence that form the 23 large wolf enclosures here. Unfortunately, we received less than 10% of that amount. But since the old fence is on its last leg and has to be replaced regardless, we developed a strategy and began the process with what we had received. Thus far, we feel we’ve done miraculously well considering the circumstances.

With 5 dozen wolves and wolf dogs in the 23 enclosures here, replacing the old worn out enclosure fencing “with the animals in the enclosures” would have created an extremely precarious situation, for both them and us. In order to do this without compromising the animals’ sanctuary environment or risk having them escape, we decided to begin the process by building 5 new enclosures, with the intention of transferring five of the sanctuary packs into them once they’re finished. This strategy will allow us to begin replacing the old worn out fence and rotten fence posts in the other 23 enclosures (minus the five we’re working on now of course), without compromising the wolves’ environment, risking injury to them or us, or creating a containment (escape) issue.

We've erected about 1800’ linear feet of new fence thus far. We have about 12,000 feet to erect in all.

We are working hard to complete the five new enclosures; two are 95% complete and the other three of them are approximately 75%-80% complete. While we are very close to finishing the two and moving two packs into them, we’re facing some challenges and really need some help. If all of our 57,000 plus followers would donate just 5.00 or 10.00, it would more than meet our need here. I think most people don't donate because they think, "well, others will so my 5 or 10 bucks won't be missed." But unfortunately, it really does if 95% of our followers go that route. 🙁

SET BACKS

Unfortunately we were hit with replacing the well, which supports the water system for the pool houses. The new well and pump was 9400.00.

Also, while we do occasionally receive food donations, our food cost is still approximately 800.00 monthly. We purchase 3-4 pallets of Tyson chicken at a time, at a cost of 600.00 per pallet. Each pallet weighs just under 2000 lbs. and feeds the 5 dozen animals here for three weeks. Every 2 ½ to 3 months we drive to a cold storage facility in Savanna Georgia and pick up four 2000 lb. pallets of chicken leg quarters (8000 lbs./load). Unfortunately, the axles on the old (18’ x 7’) trailer we use to haul the 8000 lb. load 200 miles back to the sanctuary (400 miles round trip), gave out under the many loads over the years. So we had to purchase a new trailer with (10,000 lb. axles) so we could maintain our food source. While I managed to get them down to little more than cost, the trailer was 3300.00.

Also, we are hauling this 8000 lb. load with a 16 year old, ½ ton Toyota truck, which we desperately needed to replace a couple of years ago with a truck that’s designed to handle these types of loads. While we’re still using this truck, we’re hoping we can get a newer, more heavy duty one soon and praying the old one holds together until then. The picture at left shows the condition and capacity of our truck and its worn out suspension under a moderate load.

We’ve also been hit with approximately 2500.00 in vet bills since January and we still have 4 neuters and 3 spays pending; we have to have them done before the females go into heat in January/February. Sometimes it’s easy for us to forget about our veterinary expenses but to put things in perspective, Flea Control (Comfortis) alone for the 5 dozen animals here is approximately 700.00 monthly and another 150.00 or so for Heartworm Preventative.

And last but not least, some of you know that I’ve had three shoulder surgeries (two left and one on the right) and the last two in a 5 month period. The most recent surgery on my left shoulder was unsuccessful and now inoperable. Therefore I have to have shoulder replacement surgery when we can afford it. Having had a total of 13 surgeries since we began here 12 years ago, I am not one to allow these things to slow me down much or affect the care of these animals. I’ve actually never missed a full day here. Even on the days I had surgery I did some work here, sometimes before surgery and several times after surgery, as I did following my right shoulder surgery in February of 2016, in order to receive rescued wolf Isaac later that evening. Since my last (unsuccessful) surgery later in 2016, I have put nearly 500, 120 lb. 4x6 posts in the ground and erected nearly 1500 linear ft. of the 1800 linear ft. of fence we've erected thus far. But doing so with a worthless left shoulder required me to overcompensate with my left arm, which unfortunately resulted in a torn biceps muscle. (see pic below). At this time, Debra and I do not have the $ to pay for shoulder replacement (and biceps) surgeries right now as we’re still paying on my last unsuccessful shoulder surgery.

The biceps was torn on Sunday April 16 and while I have continued to work and have actually put in approximately 140 of the 580 4x6 posts since then (approximately 300 posts before that), we did have to hire some temporary help. One person was 13.00/hr. for about 30 hours weekly and another for 10.00/hr. for about 16 hours a week. This was another 4000.00 we didn’t have to spend.

For the record, the biceps tear seems to have relieved some of the tension on the shoulder (labrum), which has made using my arm less painful in the shoulder. Actually, I’ve surprisingly productive out here since the biceps tear in April. Nonetheless, this is one of the set-backs we’re dealing with here and I have no choice other than to continue working on the facility until it’s all done, at which time we hope to be able to get the surgeries done. But getting the resources to hire help is critical, as this 57 year old body doesn’t hold up doing this “young man’s” work like it used to.

At any rate, the expense of these “set-backs” has really done a number on our efforts to complete these first five enclosures, especially considering that we only raised a fraction of what we needed for the fence replacement to begin with. So we’re asking everyone to please help out if you can.

Finally, in our initial fence funding campaign, we were trying to raise 375K to replace the 2 ½ linear miles of 8’ and 10’ fence. In spite of only raising a fraction of that amount, the strategy we implemented to rebuild the initial five enclosures allowed us to cut a few “financial” corners. This is largely because of the volume of work I did myself, which eliminated “most” of the temporary labor cost we originally estimated. With respect to “the remaining” 18 enclosures, we still need around 200K-220K to get this done and they’re in far worse condition now than they were when we launched the fence funding effort. And please keep in mind that we still need some financial help to finish up the initial 5 enclosures that are almost done. Again, these first five must be completed in order to move five packs over, so we can begin reconstructing the fences lines in the remaining 18 enclosures.

I’m more than happy to continue on with little to no “temporary” hired labor, as even with these injuries, I still genuinely enjoy doing the heavy construction work. That being said, I honestly don’t know how long my body is going to hold up handling the weight of the heavy materials. So we really do need as much financial support as we can get to get the facility up to par.

So if you enjoy seeing our pictures and videos and are able to help support what we're doing here, please send us 5.00 or 10.00. Again, if all of our followers did this for us, it would more than meet our need and we could devote more of our time to interacting with the animals and post more pics and videos, as opposed to working all day, everyday. Please send us a small donation if you can, no amount is too small!!! 🙂

Debra and I sincerely thank you all for watching our video and taking the time to read our update. If you’re able to help us, we’d sincerely appreciate it, as we really need your support right now. Donations can be made on our website via PayPal, www.bigoakwolfsanctuary.org (or just click the "Donate" link at the top of this page), or if you prefer, checks can be mailed to:

Please help Kenzie find her forever home and share!🤗❤
How has she not been adopted?! She is absolutely gorgeous!! She is such a showoff for the camera!😍

Our beautiful foster pup Kenzie has been searching for her forever home for several months now! She loves to play with other dogs and loves to go swimming or play in the water. She knows basic commands such as sit and shake and needs someone that is able to continue working on her manners with jumping up or walking on a leash. She loves to give kisses and is a great cuddler. She has been great with older children (mine are 8 & 11), dogs and is in a foster home with multiple cats. She is close to a year old and is fully vetted, rabies, spayed, microchipped and heartworm negative. She is also on flea and heartworm prevention.
If you are interested in adopting this beautiful girl please send us an email to poochiespetrescue@gmail.com for an adoption application. We look forward to hearing from you!❤🐶

"Jackson" is now accepting Adoption Applications. We rescued him from Clay County after his owners surrendered him.

He is 10 years young, a Jack Russell Terrier, medium energy, & loves his tennis balls. He is being fostered by Traci Grantz Tillman and she has worked with him building his confidence & pack leader manners. He can be mouthy, but listens to correction. Best in a home with older children & no cats.

He is utd on vaccinations, rabies, & neutered. He is heartworm negative and is on flea and heartworm prevention.

If you are interested in adopting this adorable little guy please email us at poochiespetrescue@gmail.com for an adoption application. We look forward to hearing from you! 🤗💗🐶

If he's aggressive he should be put down, it's only a matter of time before a tragedy happens and you'll regret it.

I don't even know this dog and neither do you... all I hear he's done is shown his teeth... this is not enough of a reason to end this dogs life... the only thing I will regret is not trying to help him find some one who won't just give up on him like that and will give him a forever home

If you can't find anyone willing to take him, tell her to look into SAFE. it's a no kill shelter that will actually help find a home

Thank you so much

He could be in pain and that's why he is showing his teeth

Pitt sisters is a pitbull rescue

If he is showing his teeth it is because his teeth are itching. I have a pit myself he does the same thing. My husband googled it that is the cause of him showing his teeth.

Pit Sisters for sure!! ❤

Pit sisters!

Please share. I did.

My neighbor came over last night and told me she took Frank to the humane society and he was put down... I'm pretty devastated that she didn't try harder to save him or keep him...

I still have all of them and can you meet in st Augustine close to 207?

Long haired

I live on 207. 😀 gotta couple questions. Do these things breed like mice? I had a couple a few years ago, and before I knew it, I had about 90. Do 2 of the same sex fight? My cage is actually a guinea pig cage. But the wiring is very small, I just checked it. Not even a mouse could get out. How many u got? My cage is big. Would u consider a deal on all?

Typically they need to be separated from each other because they do/can fight. And yes they breed like crazy females come into heat every 4 days. If you want to do some research before you get one add syrian hamster lover group and they can tell you more like cage requirements and wheel size ect

Still all avaible

ADVICE TRUELY NEEDED
Just a question but after u got a male dog fixed did anyone else noticed that their dog had gotten really destructive to either ur items or your house my male got fixed in February of this year never had any issues with him chewing or being destructive to my house but ever sense he has been fixed he's been very destructive he broke my bothroom door a few days after he got fixed while still in the cone so I still have no bathroom door yet he started chewing my couch put a huge hole in my chair starting to get at my back door from the outside when I bring my dogs outside and scratches and bites at it and he's been going after my clothes (bras) pants shoes but only my things not my husband except shoes
Now mind u... He and my other dog stay out in my house all night they have tons of toys to play with and chew on. my female doesn't do any of this just my male sense he got fixed in February and it seems like everything I do to redirect him to his toys it's not work any ideas to help with this
I have pics of things he has destroyed and still destroying
Hr never had this form of behavior before he got fixed
Please NO RUDE COMMENTS

Him being neutered or not has nothing to do with it! When dogs are puppies they destroy everything then they learn not to but some how forget and go through the same destructive stage again don't get me wrong him being neutered and destroying everything might him being mad for you doing that to him but he's a puppy and he's going through that stage where he's just does what he wants!

Hopefully that helped! Hah he just needs to be trained that's all!

I never had this issue till he got fixed and he's my registered service dog he is trained but this behavior is all new with in the last 3 months sense he got fixed that's y I said I need the advice how to get him out of this habit

He's mad you took his balls lol

Have you had a follow up with the vet? Make sure there's nothing else physical going on. If not then it's less likely to do with neutering and more likely due to other things like boredom or anxiety. Dogs chew but its not typical for them to do it to that extent. Make sure he gets enough physical and mental exercise, supervise whenever possible, crate when alone to prevent damage and practicing the wrong behavior. As a trainer I would have a lot more questions but that's where to start. I can't give much more specific advice over facebook without an eval but there are a few good groups you can go to, I'll link them next.

Possibilities of reasons for your pups behavior change could be one of the following: Not getting enough excerise. Not getting enough mental stimulation. Inconsistencies in living environment or changes in his routine. Health problems can cause behavior issues more than people realize. Also remember that "nuisance" behaviors are perfectly natural parts of a dog's repertoire and vary depending on breed. Hope you figure out what going on with your pup! Best of luck!

Do you have the trainers contact info that did the service training? I ask bc there are service dog training standards/requirements and below is one. I would get in contact with them ASAP bc it sounds like the only service he is providing is that of destruction. 😳 hope you find a solution to your problem. #6. The assistance dog program must document monthly follow ups with clients for the first 6 months following placement. Personal contact will be done by qualified staff or program volunteer within 12 months of graduation and annually thereafter.

If it's a new behavior then yes you need to find the root cause. Has anything in his environment changed? Has your schedule changed? Literally go thru everything you can think of the smallest detail can be a clue as to why he is acting out.

I'm getting a new puppy on 5/23. I need a vet for her here in town, any suggestions? I also want someone who provides great service, but doesn't charge a small fortune just for an office visit. I know having a pet is expensive, so I don't want to be lectured on that, but paying $150 just for an office visit is a bit much. Any suggestions are appreciated 🙂 ... See MoreSee Less

Try no more homeless pets ik they have e appointments for 25

Banfield clinic inside Petsmart will do a whole year for around $30 a month and it includes all shots, testing, spay or neuter, and unlimited office visits. We love the people at the Orange Park location! They are really good!

Petco does vaccines and microchip

Dr hirsch in pvb is awesome and is very inexpensive compared to most

We go to the humane society. They have wellness clinics and the vet is absolutely amazing! We even had our beagles teeth cleaned and pulled through them!

Southeast Veterinary Hospital! Dr.s Timberlake and the staff are amazing and inexpensive

Bartram Trails Vet on ST 16

Murabella Animal hospital ! Best reviews and amazing helpful staff and docs. Stay away from banfield, and any chain vet clinics. I am a vet tech currently.

Matanzas River Animal Hospital - awesome

Awe one of my dream pups😍 what are you/they asking as a rehoming fee?

$700. They'll be 8 weeks old on the 18th I believe. They have full registration with the akc. Fully vetted and utd on all puppy shots.
